Welcome Letter

On behalf of the entire staff of Wilmington Treatment Center, it is our pleasure to welcome you to our facility.  It is our hope that your stay with us will mark the beginning of an exciting and fulfilled life of recovery that will be free of the pain of active addiction. We commend you for taking this difficult and meaningful step. We respect you for having the courage and willingness to change your life.

In this century, people addicted to alcohol and drugs were thought to be morally corrupt and lacking willpower. Those views shaped society’s response to alcohol and drug use, treating it as a moral failing rather than a treatable disease. This “moralistic” approach led to an emphasis on punitive rather than preventative therapeutic actions.

At Wilmington Treatment Center, it is our belief that addiction is a disease that affects both an individual’s brain as well as their behavior. The disease is progressive in nature and ultimately fatal if not treated. We realize that years of active addiction bring about emotional anguish, negative consequence and problems. However, with ongoing abstinence and the application of the principles of recovery that you will soon learn, you can begin to put your life back in order. With each additional day of drug free living, you will find that you are more and more capable of dealing with life. You will discover that you are beginning to experience the joy of recovery.

You can make change happen. It won’t be easy and you must be willing to be honest, vulnerable and open-minded. These principles will allow you to build your recovery foundation. Know that each and every step will not be easy and that you do not have to do it alone. There will be staff and fellow patients to offer support every step along the way. If you have any questions, you are encouraged to talk to any member of the staff.

Lao-tzu said, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” So with hope and courage know we are here with you.

Sincerely,

The Staff of Wilmington Treatment Center
